Historic Riverside Cemetery Self Guided Tour You can tour Riverside Cemetery on your own schedule. Walk or drive the winding paths of this Victorian era “rural garden” cemetery created in 1885 and enjoy the vistas that were part of its plan. Inside the gates are figures, carved in a variety of stone, which droop in sorrow, gaze pensively or reach to the heavens in a language of grief unfamiliar to us. Mausoleums standing as monuments to whole families have colorful stained glass windows and ornate doorways. Here the famous and the humble rest together: financier and pauper, Christian and Jew, black and white, powerful and meek, soldier and civilian. Asheville’s character was built on the shoulders of these residents of Riverside and your tour will reveal some of their stories.
