"“Asheville Historic Tours are the tours you should take if you want to understand the real Asheville,"—Jan Schochet, Chapel Hill, NC. Asheville native

My husband just couldn’t stop listening to it. Now we know when we have company we need to take them to the cemetery.”

Visit Riverside Cemetery on your own time. At your own pace. When it’s convenient for you. Walk or drive the winding paths of this Victorian era Garden Cemetery created in 1885 and enjoy the vistas that were part of its plan. Inside the gates are stone-carved figures that seem to droop in sorrow, gaze out upon the landscape or reach to the heavens in a show of grief unfamiliar in our modern times. Stone or marble mausoleums, monuments to entire families, dot Riverside’s landscape, incorporating colorful stained glass windows and ornate doorways within their solemn architecture. Here the famous and the humble rest together: financier and pauper, Christian and Jew, black and white, soldier and civilian, the powerful and the meek. Asheville’s character was built on the shoulders of these residents of Riverside and your tour will reveal some of their stories. Take advantage of modern technology and comfort with a downloadable mp3 file or CD of Asheville’s historic Riverside Cemetery brought to you by Asheville Historic Tours.
